Fair Use Press ad campaign

5-4-04: An ad just started running on Talking Points Memo, Josh Marshall's very popular blog. The last time I ran an ad on TPM (for the Nothing So Strange DVD), it did extremely well. And the readers of Talking Points Memo include many journalists and other influencers, so each impression is worth quite a lot, especially at this early stage.

So that Josh's readers don't click straight to something not-safe-for-work, I have that ad pointing to this page as a buffer (update: it looks like this now). Not a perfect solution, though, and I'm open to any suggestions for a different landing page. Also open to any suggestions for new art and/or text for the TPM ad. We can change it as much as we want--although it needs to be in the spirit of the original, so as not to give Josh something he didn't bargain for (i.e., it shouldn't get racier or more vulgar). It's good to change Blogads daily or so, as blogs get repeat visitors a lot.

This one-week Sue Me, Asshole ad cost $125. As soon as revenues from book sales and donations reach $125, I'll buy another ad, probably a Blogad. Any suggestions for the next ad buy are welcome, as are any donations. 100% of net proceeds go to the ad campaign. Neither I nor Fair Use Press take any profit.

(Note: That's a free referral script, and sometimes it just plain doesn't work. In fact, it's been very unstable lately.)

UPDATE 5-6-04: Here's a chart showing the progress of the ad. Only two days in, we've already paid only 10 cents per click, which is pretty good. I'll keep changing the ad to try to maintain the click-through rate.

UPDATE: 5-7-04: The click-through rate started falling again. I think we've reached the TPM audience. That's the problem with running the same ad for a week on a blog--after a few days, X% of the readers have already seen the ad and made their decision about it, with X getting bigger by the day. Not wanting the space to go to waste, I changed the ad to point to a new entry here at this blog. As it's a general ad for this blog, I'll pro-rate the amount and only charge about half of the $125 buy to the Fair Use Press revenue and pay the rest myself (out of my own Blogads revenue, actually). Which is good. Because after the PayPal fees, we only have about $50 or so to date. (I didn't realize when I priced the book at $1 that PayPal fees would be 33 cents on each dollar. Now I know. I'll probably choose a new sales strategy next time.)

UPDATE 5-15-04: I switched ads too frequently to keep updating the chart (15 revisions total). Here's the final tally as a screenshot from Blogads.com:

May 7-9 (and the middle of the night May 10) were non-Fair Use Press, but the rest of the week was. For about $62.50 spent (revenue after PayPal fees), we got 2567 clicks, for about $.024 per click (that's under two and a half cents per click), which any Webvertising pro will tell you is beyond impressive. (The minimum price on a Google text ad, for comparison, is $.05 per click.)

If you bought the premium edition or otherwise donated to the campaign, thanks much. After the initial attention, sales have fallen off to one or two per day now, so it'll be awhile before I run another ad, but I'll update this space when it's time.
